Haley Levine wakes up one day to find out her best friend has just committed suicide the night before. She is called down to the main office to meet the stern school councilor and speak about the events of the day before. Haley, confused and desperate, refuses to speak and is confined to the office.

As she sits in the office, she witnesses the other students who met her best friend the day before, including a mysterious girl in gothic clothing, a nice-looking blonde girl, an arrogant trumpet player, and a dark-haired soccer player. Haley is surprised to discover she can make out their muffled interviews in the room behind her, and as she listens in, she learns more about her best friend’s life than she’s ever known.
